Caldwell College Offers Pre-college Summer Experience

Caldwell, NJ – December 20, 2011 - Caldwell College will offer its Summer College at Caldwell (SCAC) program in July 2012 for high school students interested in Math and Science, who will be first generation college students.

Information sessions about SCAC will be held on February 21, 2012 at 7 p.m. and February 25, 2012 at 12 noon.

The pre-college, highly competitive program gives eligible students the chance to earn 3 college credits while studying environmental science, chemistry, biology and statistics. The students will also study green reactions, medicine, and vectors. There will be seminars on SAT test taking strategies, scholarship exploration, financial aid and more.

The students will live in the residence hall and experience life on Caldwell College’s campus. They will attend field trips to area sites including: the Thomas Edison Museum, Liberty Science Center and the Meadowlands Environmental Center. At a New Jersey Jackals baseball game, they will explore the physics behind fireworks.

Parents and guardians will be given the opportunity to attend workshops on the college search process and financial aid.

Students who are interested in the program should meet the following criteria:

Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident
Must be a New Jersey resident high school senior in the fall 2012
Must be the first-generation college student (neither parent has earned a four-year college degree)
Must have a 3.0 or above high school GPA (grade point average)
Must have three years of high school science, including biology and chemistry and three years of high school math including algebra and geometry.

There is no cost to the student. Funding is provided from the US Department of Education College Access Challenge Grant through the NJ Commission on Higher Education and Caldwell College.

Applications will be taken between January 16 and March 2. Program admission is determined through review of completed applications, essay, transcript, an interview, and a letter of recommendation from a science or math teacher or school counselor.
