Caldwell College Student Attends Meetings at United Nations with Path to Peace Foundation

Caldwell College student Nora Kdiry says her experience at the Path to Peace Foundation's college program in New York City was amazing. Kdiry, who will be a senior in the fall, attended the week-long seminar on "Catholic Social Teaching: Building a World of Hope and a Communty for Peace" May 18 to 23, along with students from several other colleges and universities.

The aim of the conference was to give college students more exposure to the social and moral teachings of the Church in order to contribute solid values and convictions to the formation of their minds and consciences. Students attended meetings and lectures at the Holy See Mission. An English and Communication Arts major, Kdiry says the best part was going to the United Nations and actually hearing the Prince of Jordan speak about human dignity and human rights. She says it was also a wonderful experience to be able to meet actual delegates at the conference. Speakers included Most Rev. Archbishop C. Migliore, Permanent Observer to the Holy See to the United Nations, and senior officials and ambassadors to the United Nations.

"I'm Islamic and I learned that I can be of one faith and still follow Catholic Social Teaching," Kdiry said. She also really enjoyed hearing the students from the World Youth Alliance speak out about human dignity and peace.

The students were given the opportunity to become more familiar with the United Nations Charter, Vatican II Documents and the Compendium of the Catholic Social Doctrine of the Church.

Kdiry said the Retreat House in Riverdale was wonderful too and she met several students from other colleges. "We keep in touch and we are facebooking." She highly recommends the program to other students and says "there should be a line out the door of students" waiting to sign up for the next conference.
