Caldwell College Communication Arts Professor Bob Mann has begun hosting the New Jersey Council for Humanities (NJCH) radio program Humanities Connection. The program features fascinating and accomplished authors, filmmakers, historians and teachers. NJCH has partnered with the Fairleigh Dickinson University’s radio station WFDU 89.1 to offer the interviews.

The episodes of Humanities Connection come from NJCH’s wide-ranging activities, including grantmaking, a Speakers Bureau, Literature & Medicine, Justice: A Dialogue Through Film, the Teacher Institute and other programming. The show airs at 8 a.m. the last Sunday of the month during the “Radio Omnibus” program.

“This is one of the most interesting broadcasting projects I've ever done. This program lets me explore history, literature and documentary films," said Professor Mann.

In a recent show, Professor Mann interviewed Jackson Lears, professor of history at Rutgers University and editor-in-chief of Raritan. Lears discusses his new book, Rebirth of a Nation, the Making of Modern America, 1877-1920 (Harper Collins, 2009), which was also chosen as an Honor Book by NJCH this year.

Another show featured a look at Revolution '67, a documentary on 1967 the Newark Riots. Professor Mann interviewed filmmakers Marylou Tibaldo-Bongiorno and Jerome Bongiorno and Dr. Clement Price, preeminent historian of the African-American experience in New Jersey.

In another program, Professor Mann interviews John V. Fleming, winner of the 2010 NJCH book award on his book The Anti-Communist Manifestos: Four Books That Shaped the Cold War.

The show is broadcast on the last Sunday of each month at 8 a.m. as part of Radio Omnibus. After each broadcast, clips of the shows are available as a podcast on the NJCH website at www.njch.org/Humanitiesconnection.html.
