Daytime Weekday Graduate Courses Being Offered for the First Time

Caldwell College is offering weekday daytime graduate classes for the first time. This semester, Business Law, Ethical Behavior and Social Responsibility, a required course in the MBA program, meets Friday mornings from 9 a.m to 11:30 a.m. This new scheduling option came about in response to suggestions noted on recent graduate student surveys.

Business Professor Virginia Rich, J.D., who teaches the course, said that the Business Division is offering this option on a trial basis to see how it works. Professor Bernard O'Rourke, J.D., Associate Dean of the Division of Business, said that overall it makes the graduate business program at Caldwell much more balanced and attractive since it nicely supplements the evening, weekend and distance learning options that the College already offers. He noted that daytime classes are a very manageable option for many graduate students. “For example, students in our five year BS/MBA programs are unlikely to have the job obligations which preclude most of our regular graduate students from taking a class during the daytime. In addition, full-time international students welcome the chance to take morning and afternoon weekday classes. Friday morning is especially attractive to other students who can arrange time off with their employers.”

Students in the class seemed pleased with the idea that they could avoid taking night classes, especially during the winter months, when commuting in the evening could be difficult. This group prefers the two-and-a-half-hour format of a regular 15-week semester over the accelerated format of the 7-week Saturday program. Students who continued with graduate school directly after undergraduate work said that the idea made sense and it was also convenient for them to continue on with daytime classes.
