Program Description
Art therapy supervisors are challenged in their work with a
myriad of diverse influences. Multiple levels of interactions converge
in the supervisory hour-training program, agency, supervisor, student,
artwork and client. All of these factors ultimately have an affect the
professional development of the art therapist and influence client service.
Of particular significance is the phenomena of parallel process, whereby
client-therapist dynamics can mirror (or be mirrored by) therapist-supervisor
and even institutional dynamics. This can place the supervisor in an emotional
"sandwich" where their own feeling states, actions and thoughts can become
impacted by those around them.
Who Should Attend?
Art therapy practica supervisors, art therapists providing registration
supervision and art therapists who would like to develop an art therapy
practica site or expand the services in their departments by hiring and
supervising other art therapists.
Format
The program will be a combination of didactic, interactive, and group
activities to address a defined scope of the realities of supervision
and success will be achieved by means of pre- and post-tests. Further,
a morning of theoretical consideration will be deepened by an afternoon
of artmaking and role playing. Participants are encouraged to bring supervisory
vignettes and art work for discussion.
Program Objectives
The art therapy supervisor will increase his/her awareness of
the dynamic of parallel process.
The art therapy supervisor will increase his/her awareness of the influence
and role of the training program in supervisory contacts.
The art therapy supervisor will increase his/her awareness of the influence
of the client/client population in the supervisory contacts.
The art therapy supervisor will increase his/her awareness of the influence
and role of the agency setting in the supervisory contacts.
Participants will examine through case vignette discussion, instances
of parallel process in their supervisory relationships.
Participants will stimulate parallel process in supervision and therapy
through role play.
