What is Interlibrary Loan?

• Interlibrary Loan is a service for academic research through which books and journal articles not owned by Jennings Library may be requested and obtained form other libraries.
• Requests are generated by going directly to the Jerseycat catalog first.
• If you need to expand the search region you can initiate a request by going directly to the Worldcat catalog.

Who may request an ILL?

• Faculty, staff, administrators and students at all levels possessing a current valid ID and email account with no holds on their records.
• To verify your status, provide your Caldwell College email address on your request.

What are the guidelines for submitting an ILL?

• First, check to see if Jennings Library owns the materials.
• Check for alternative titles within Jennings Library.
• No more than 5 requests may be submitted at one time.
Jerseycat is free. Worldcat requests may incur charges for book loans as well as articles.

What may be requested using ILL ?

• Books and/or journal articles (media and dissertations are usually not loaned) which are needed for academic research.
• Only books are lent using Worldcat (not Journal articles).
• Your local public library can be contacted for personal or leisure reading requests.

What information must be provided on the request?

• Accurate citation information must be provided on all requests.
• ISBN or ISSNs are desirable.
• Copyright dates for books are needed.
• Volume, issue, date and pages are necessary for journal articles.
• Caldwell College NetID (email address).

How long will it take?

Jerseycat requests come to us via a delivery service and usually arrive in 7-10 days.
Worldcat requests are sent to as many as 5 libraries in a specific sequence. If one library cannot provide, it is passed on, therefore these requests can take longer.

Where are the materials picked up?

• You will be contacted by Caldwell College email when the materials arrive.
• Pick up and return books to the Circulation desk in Jennings Library.
• Articles may be kept.

Are renewals permitted?

• Renewal is not a guarantee. Each library has its own policies.
• If you think you will need the book longer than 4 weeks, please call Ellen Johnston for Jerseycat x3502 or Joan Reamer for Worldcat x3564 at least several days before the due date.

Borrower’s responsibility

• Some libraries charge fees for lending books and providing articles. Average fees usually start at $12- $15.
• You will be responsible for all charges made by the lending library if materials are lost or damaged.
• Returning materials extremely late or in poor condition jeopardizes the Library’s ability to borrow materials from other libraries. Please return materials on time and in good condition.
• It is important to pick up Interlibrary Loan materials in a timely manner. If interlibrary loan materials are left unclaimed, a $10 fee will be added to your library record which could prevent you from registering for future courses. If books are left unclaimed after 10 days, they will be returned to the lending library. If a student frequently leaves materials unclaimed, their ILL privileges may be suspended.

WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later use, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law. By submitting this request you agree to comply with these restrictions.

The Interlibrary Loan Request Form is only available to students, faculty and staff of Caldwell College. To access the form, enter your Caldwell College NetID login and password when prompted.
